Al vanaf 1954 werd het Newport Jazz Festival elke zomer in Newport, Rhode Island, USA, gehouden. Het was een echt Jazzfestival. Het heeft op verschillende locaties plaats gevonden (Newport Casino op de Bellevue Avenue Historic District van Newport, het Belcourt gebouw, het Freebody Park)
In 1961 ging het festival niet door vanwege de schermutselingen tussen publiek en de National Guard het jaar daarvoor maar in 1962 was het weer terug (Freebody Park).
In 1964 werd besloten het festival het jaar daarop niet meer in het park te laten plaatsvinden. Het was te groot geworden voor deze locatie.
Uitgeweken werd naar The Festival Field.
In 1969 kwam er een toevoeging van andere muzieksoorten. Fusion jazz, soul, blues en rock. ( Jeff Beck,  Blood, Sweat & Tears, Ten Years After,  Jethro Tull, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Mayall, Sly & the Family Stone, James Brown, Herbie Hancock, B. B. King, Led Zeppelin)
1971 voegde The Allman Brothers toe aan de lijst, wat grote problemen gaf door fans die het concert van Dionne Warwick verstoorden.

Er werd besloten de editie van 1972 niet in Rhode Island te laten plaatsvinden maar in New York.
Er werd uitgeweken naar mega-locaties als het Yankee Stadium en Radio City Music Hall, Wollman Amphitheater, Carnegie Hall, Philharmonic Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, Hudson River Boat Ride, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Roseland Ballroom, Shea Stadium, Singer Bowl en Nassau Colliseum.
